Youngstown Profile
Youngstown is a mid-size city, located in northeastern Ohio. The City has a population of 60,068 (2020 census) and is the county seat of Mahoning County, Ohio.
Founded in 1797 as a small agricultural town on the banks of the Mahoning River, the mid-19th century discovery of local raw materials for iron smelting started a boom of industrialization and urbanization that extended into the first half of the 20th century. The City became one of the nation's top centers of steel production and the population soared to over 170,000. People from around the country and the world came to live and work in Youngstown, creating a cultural melting pot community. Stately tall buildings, designed by renowned national architects, hotels, and opulent auditoriums and theatres appeared Downtown, making Youngstown a regular destination for big name entertainers on tour.
Post-war suburbanization and the later decline in the steel industry resulted in a steep reduction in population in the late 20th century. The 21st century has seen the population decline trend subside, however, with Youngstown settling into a stable poplulation of around 60,000. The tall buildings and several of the auditoriums remain, as well as the renowned Butler Institute of American Art, the beautiful and historic Mill Creek Park, Youngstown State University, and the diverse cultural traditions of the City's residents. 21st century Downtown additions of the Covelli Centre indoor arena and the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre have again made Youngstown a destination of choice for national and international entertainers.
Youngstown's historical inheritance has blessed it with assets and amenities that few cities of its size can match. However, the big city appearance is coupled with a small town feel, creating a unique place where you can stand out, have a voice, or make a difference. That's why Youngstown is known as The City of YOU.
